Margaret Hamburg is an internationally recognized expert in medicine and public health. Currently, she serves as foreign secretary for the National Academy of Medicine and board chair of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
 
Prior to this, Hamburg was commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, known for advancing regulatory science, medical product innovation and the globalization of the agency, while also overseeing the implementation of groundbreaking laws to curb tobacco use and to enhance food safety. 
 
Previously, Hamburg served as vice president and senior scientist at the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a foundation dedicated to reducing nuclear, chemical and biological threats. Other significant positions have included New York City health commissioner; assistant secretary for planning and evaluation, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and assistant director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health. Earlier in her career, Hamburg did neuroscience research at the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institutes of Health and at the Rockefeller University.
 
A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, she completed her residency in internal medicine at the New York Hospital-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
