Story Landis is a neurobiologist and former director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), having worked at the NINDS since 1995 and directed the institute from 2003 until her retirement in 2014. As director, Landis worked to shape scientific policy both with the NIH and at the national level. She was also instrumental in launching new NIH initiatives, including co-chairing the NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research and launching the NIH BRAIN (Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies) Initiative.
Throughout her research career, Landis made fundamental contributions to the understanding of how functionally appropriate synapses form during development and the role of neurotrophins in the peripheral nervous system.
Landis is also an elected fellow of the Institute of Medicine, the Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
