SFARI Investigator, SPARK Scientific Advisory Board WebsitePaul Lipkin is the director of the Department of Medical Informatics and principal investigator of the Interactive Autism Network (IAN) at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and an associate professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. As director of medical informatics, Lipkin oversees the staff and operations of IAN, a patient- and family-powered online community and research platform and registry of over 50,000 participants that connects individuals on the autism spectrum and their families with researchers nationwide. IAN is now part of PCORnet, the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network that is an initiative of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).
Lipkin’s clinical and research careers have focused on the early identification, evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents with developmental disabilities, including autism, learning and attention disorders. Prior to his current position, Lipkin served for 15 years as the director of the Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Center for Development and Learning.
Lipkin has provided national leadership on children with special healthcare needs and disabilities, including autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders, through his work with the American Academy of Pediatrics, where he served as chair of its Council on Children with Disabilities from 2002 to 2007. He remains active in key academy initiatives, including its guidelines on developmental and autism screening and implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. He was the recipient of the academy’s Arnold J. Capute Award in 2011 for his efforts on behalf of children with disabilities. Lipkin served as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow in 2010–2011, working in the Office of Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius.
