Request for Applications FAQ

Q: Where do I submit the application?
A: The RFA application is open on https://proposalcentral.altum.com. You will only have access to the SFARI 2010 RFA Application if your LOI was approved. If you are not able to access the application and received notification that your LOI was accepted, please email grants@simonsfoundation.org .

Q: I have questions about the Simons Simplex Collection.
A: Please see sfari.org/simons-simplex-collection for more information. For questions not addressed on the website, email request@sfari.org.

Q: Are references, figures, and figure legends included in the narrative six (6) page limit? How should they be included?
A: Figures, figure legends and references are not included in the six (6) page limit. Please attach them at the end of the narrative within the same PDF.

Q: What can be included as an appendix?
A: "In press" papers can be included as appendices, as well as any papers that you consider essential for the work of the review committee (not more than three (3)). Any other material should be included, if possible, in the narrative. If you have video attachments associated with your proposal, please contact the Simons Foundation to set up the upload at grants@simonsfoundation.org.

Q: Does the 15 percent minimum percent effort apply to all collaborators?
A: The 15 percent minimum effort applies only to the PI, but we would expect other collaborators, in particular Co-PIs, to have efforts that reflect their role in the project.

Q: Where do I enter specific information (Principal Investigator information, budget, etc.)?
A: Please contact proposalCENTRAL for help with specific navigation of the application sections.

Q: Where do I upload subcontract budget details? There is no space for this under "Consortium and Contractual Costs."
A: Please enter the total amount of the subcontract in the "Detailed Budget" section of the application. You can upload detailed subcontract budgets in NIH budget format in the Proposal Attachments section. Be sure to include any subcontracts in the budget justification.

Q: Where do I include the SSC projected costs?
A: If you plan to use SSC biospecimens the Simons Foundation will review estimated costs based on the price list on our website: sfari.org/biospecimen-prices. This will be considered separately from other project costs. Enter the projected cost in the field marked "Estimated cost for SSC Biospecimens" in the Budget Period Detail, below the line. Description of use, including the number and type of biospecimens, should be included in the narrative text and budget justification.

Q: Does the Simons Foundation require letters of support or collaboration?
A: We do not require letters of support or letters of collaboration for co-investigators and therefore do not expect them as an attachment. The role of collaborators can be selected when they are added as Key Personnel. Further description of their involvement can be detailed in the budget justification.

Q: Is there a confirmation email when I submit my full proposal?
A: A confirmation email is sent upon submission. Please contact proposalcCENTRAL Customer Support, pcsupport@altum.com, if you have submitted your application and have not received a confirmation email from proposalCENTRAL within 10 minutes. Make sure that spam filters allow emails from pcsupport@altum.com.

Q: I get an error message citing a missing section when I try to submit.
A: Please click the "Validate" button to review your application for missing sections. The submission instructions list the required modules and attachments, and required sections are indicated within the modules. If you are still receiving error messages after completing and saving the indicated sections, please contact proposalcCENTRAL Customer Support, pcsupport@altum.com.

Q: Is validating my proposal sufficient for submission?
A: No. Validating the proposal only checks for errors and will alert you to missing requirements of your LOI or application. If the application is complete, you must hit "Submit." You will receive an email within 10 minutes, and should contact proposalCENTRAL Customer Support, pcsupport@altum.com, if you do not receive confirmation. Your proposal will now be listed under the "In Progress" tab with the status "Submitted."

Q: The deadline for notification has passed. What is the status of my proposal?
A: You should receive notification within 24 hours of the deadline. Please check your spam filter settings if you have not received it by then.

Q: When will applicants be informed of the final funding decision?
A: Applicants will be notified on or around June 15, 2010.
